Technique Challenge 99 (9/20/11) Epsom Salt Webbing (also called Iced Crystal)

Technique Challenge 99 (9/20/11) Epsom Salt Webbing (also called Iced Crystal)

I received this technique in a swap from sweet SAer Kim Bolzenthal. She credits pawsitivelyhappystampin.blogspot.com.

    Ingredients:
    Epsom Salt
    Boiling Water
    Paint Brush
Cardstock (doesn't seem to work on black-I had to try it for myself-and it didn't work.)

Put 1/2 cup of Epsom Salt in a hot tolerant bowl. Add 1/2 cup of boiling water and stir until the salt crystals are dissolved. Use a paint brush to paint the entire surface of the cardstock and cover well.

Do Not go back and try to add more after it begins to dry-it will ruin it. I think it is best to let it dry naturally and plan to make it the first thing we do at my upcoming technique class. We can then finish the card last of all. Be patient....and happy stamping!

Consider trying it for a crystalized ice look too.

It looks really nice in purple I think....here's

Kim's super cute, super spooky card

You can work on this challenge whenever you want. There is no time limit. Please post your work in the Technique challenge gallery with the phrase Tech99 in the keywords and post your link here, so we can all see it.

I hope you will find time to play and have fun!

We are getting low on techniques......IF I miss a week, you'll know why. Email me if you have any ideas or would like to host a technique we've not featured yet.

I am a little confused....go figure. Does it create a layer of stuff on top of the cardstock that looks crystalized? Or does it discolor the cardstock where you paint it?(similar to bleach) Does it always make it look like thin lines/streaks? Could I make it look swirly? I like it, just want to know what to expect when considering a project with it.

Do you think you could (would you want to) add reinker to it to make the streaks a color?

Sounds to me like Kathleen needs to play and report back to the rest of us as to what works and what doesn't! I will await you report!.

Seriously, Cool ideas, Kathleen! I'm thinking some of them would be really neat. I'll see if I can play.

Yes a layer of crystal on the top....It doesn't discolor the cardstock. You can apply the heat tool to it immediately and get a white mess. That sounds bad, but the heat tool way would make a nice night sky background--I tried it and I think I saw one like this at convention.

If you add reinker, I think you'd want several colors (maybe put drops on the cardstock?) and bowls and you'd want to put it on white. That sounds cool....Let us know how it works!

What Rhonda said and more, this has a crystal forming reaction. I'm not sure you could get swirls. As it dries, it forms the cracks and lines. I want to try this on white but have been back to back busy with events since I got home form UT. I'd love to see what it does with the reinkers added. When it puddled in an area and was thick, it actually chipped off the cardstock.

Thanks for selecting my card Rhonda!

Thank you ladies for the info. I don't have time to "play" for a few days. When I do, I will let you know.

Can you stamp over it with Stazon or is it just an interesting background piece?

No Debbi, it has a crystallized layer on it. You couldn't stamp on it with anything.....well, maybe craft ink, but you just wouldn't want to do that. It would probably flake off the cardstock.
