Technique Challenge 3 (Tech03)

Faux Suede

Good Morning, and Welcome to our third Technique Challenge!

Today's challenge is faux suede. I created my faux suede by peeling off a layer of cardstock and adding just a bit of versamark to the surface lightly with a sponge.

You may use any form of faux suede...I know there is one in which you mix reinker with liquid applique.

Here is my example though with Kraft it looks more like a dry chamois cloth!

Happy Birthday old car!

You can work on this challenge whenever you want. There is no time limit. Please post your work in the Technique challenge gallery with the words
Tech03 in the title and post your link here, so we can all see it.

I hope you will find time to play and Have fun!

Since many of us are SU! enthusiasts, I’m going to give you very early warnings about upcoming challenges, so that you can order if needed. Next week, the only unusual thing you’ll need is household waxed paper. Next month, watercolor wonder crayons and black embossing powder (or black craft ink and clear ep) will be needed.

Well, I uploaded my card for the Faux Technique. I think it ended up looking more masculine, which is good since I'm always looking for masculine cards. Most of what I make are more feminine. It was a good technique, I am really enjoying these challenges as they really help to spur my creativity. Thanks, can't wait for the next one!

Ok, I have a really stoopid question about this technique. What happens when the versamark dries? Is it just to add a kind of mottled color to the cs? Sorry for being dense.

On a project I did, I ran the paper through the crimper a bunch of times before I separated the layers. That really seemed to help break up the fibers and make it easy to separate. Any other tricks you've used to separate the layers?

I have taken the paper and drawn it sharply over the edge of a table several times, on each side/end. I've never tried the crimper method - maybe it is easier?

Yes the versamark is just to make it appear to have smoothness in certain areas like super soft suede....if it doesn't work for you card, you don't have to use it.

I wadded my paper up before peeling it apart--great idea on the crimper!

Wow, the crimper and running it over the side of a table are both great ideas. I just used plain old fingernails and LOTS of patience to peel my paper! (I usually don't have ANY patience, instant gratification I always say!) Next time, I'll try both ideas, maybe I will be able to use this card for my next technique class after all! I really like to look of it, it truly looks like suede.

Here's the project I did using the crimper to separate the layers. It doesn't have the versamark, so I guess it's not really faux suede. The chipboard letters are covered with faux faux suede.

ETA: hmmm...you can't really see the faux suede part, but you can sort of see the crimper marks left behind. Wonder if that will be more prominent when sponging on the versamark? I gues there's no way to know unless I try it.

Very cool, Debbi! I don't think it "has to" have the Versamark to be faux suede. I've never done it that way before. It's just an option - another look.

Here's a card folio I had made with faux suede on the top layer.
